Two weeks ago my daughters, Lauren and Kaitlin, and I were walking on the beach. Lauren spotted a Starfish. Since they were little girls Lauren and Kaitlin have collected sea shells. But this was the first Starfish they had ever found. Finding that Starfish on the beach reminded me of a story about making a difference.

A grandfather and his grandson were walking along the beach early one morning. The beach was awash with thousands of Starfish. Gingerly, the grandfather would bend down, pick-up a Starfish and toss it back into the ocean. The grandson watched his grandfather, wondering what he was doing.

Finally the boy asked his grandfather, "Grandpa, what are you doing?"

The grandfather replied, "The sun is coming up, and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they will die."

"But Grandpa, there are thousands upon thousands of Starfish on the beach. You can't possibly make a difference."

His grandfather continued undeterred--picked up another Starfish and tossed it gently back into the sea---"It made a difference for that one," the grandfather replied.

You can make a difference.
