"The poorest man is not he who is without a cent, but he who is without a dream."
Pennsylvania School Journal

The United States is a nation founded on dreams. Christopher Columbus dreamed of finding a new way to India instead found a new land. The original colonists dreamed of religious freedom. Other early colonists dreamed of making a fresh start in a new land. The founding fathers dreamed of establishing a nation founded upon the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. More modern dreamers include:

  • President John F. Kennedy--the dream the United States of being the first to successfully send a man to the moon.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. -- “I have a Dream" speech delivered August 28, 1963.
  • Walt Disney--Creating a dream world in Southern California, and in Orlando, Florida.

Other Dreamers and their Dreams:

  • A wild inventor and drifter witnesses the deaths of a number of children drinking contaminated milk. He dreams of a way to preserve milk. Gail Borden--Borden's Milk and Ice Cream*
  • A widower with a young son loses his job at a department store. He dreams of being his own boss and scrapes together $1500 to open his own store. George Kinney--Kinney Shoes*
  • Two brothers-in-law with a simple dream of starting a business together and making $75 a week. They have a brilliantly simple marketing philosophy: one product served 31 different ways. Burton Baskin & Irvine Robbins--Baskin & Robbins Ice Cream*
  • When his older brother was shot down and killed in WW II, this teenager listened to the radio to ease his loneliness and dreamed of someday being an announcer of his own show. Dick Clark--American Bandstand
  • A general practitioner dreams of performing a surgical procedure thought to be impossible. His goal is to achieve this dream before his rheumatoid arthritis prevented him from operating. Dr. Christian Barnard--First successful human heart transplant surgeon*
  • The little girl liked to touch people's faces and comb their hair. She loved helping people make themselves pretty and she dreamed of becoming a skin care specialist while she watched her uncle cook up creams and potions on her mother’s gas stove. Estee Lauder--Estee Lauder Cosmetics*
  • A Kansas farm boy, whose early morning job (along with his brother) was to keep their one-room schools fire burning. One morning as they poured kerosene on the hot coals a fire started taking the life of the brother, and leaving the young farm boy severely burned. Determined to walk again, he dreamed of running track. Glenn Cunningham--Held the world record for the mile
